South Africa is no stranger to water shortages - highlighted by the ongoing water crisis in the Western Cape and the City of Cape Town recently having put contingency measures in place, to mitigate against what would be disastrous effects if the winter rains are below average. City officials have renewed calls to residents and industry to reduce water consumption and adhere to level 3b restrictions water restrictions and other water-saving and optimisation measures are necessary to ensure that water use does not exceed available water supply from the system of dams providing the city and broader region with water.

By following the below measures as a resident you can also assist in saving water:

  • Use a bucket or watering container for the watering/irrigation of gardens, lawns, flower beds and other plants, vegetable gardens. Steer away from using your hosepipe or automatic sprinkler systems is allowed.
  • Use a bucket with water to wash vehicles
  • Manually top up your swimming poolif the pool are fitted with a pool cover. Steer away from No automatic top-up systems

But what if you live in a tiny inner-city apartment and don’t own a car, a garden or a pool?

While it may seem like you’re off the hook, it’s no excuse to become lax.

Here are a number of simple ways in which you can help save water in your inner-city home:

  • Install a low-flow shower head and tap aerators on all taps.
  • Flush toilets only when necessary.
  • Install a multi-flush or dual-flush mechanism in the toilet OR put a plastic bottle filled with water in the cistern.
  • Turn off taps while brushing teeth.
  • Ensure that there are no leaking pipes or taps around the house.
  • Reuse the water from boiling vegetables or pasta to water your indoor plants once it has cooled.
  • Only wash dishes once a day and if you have a dishwasher, only wash once it’s full.
  • Keep a jug of drinking water in the fridge, instead of letting the tap run until the water is cold enough to use.
